about

Uruk is an experimental music duo founded in 2016 by two unclassifiable musicians : Thighpaulsandra & Massimo Pupillo.

Thighpaulsandra (Timothy Lewis) is a multi-instrumentalist musician, having participated in numerous Coil albums, in particular the masterpieces 'Musick to Play in the Dark' and 'Astral Disaster'. He also joined Jason Pierce's band Spiritualized for a US live tour, including the famous "Live at the Albert Hall, Let It Come Down". Massimo Pupillo is best known as the bassist of Zu, an Italian jazzcore trio, with whom he has produced more than fifteen albums as well as several solo albums and collaborations, notably with Dälek, David Chalmin or on the recent This Immortal Coil. Massimo Pupillo is an eclectic musician, collaborating in many projects, ranging from jazz to improvisation, passing through avant-garde and noise.

The duo's first album "I Leave a Silver Trail Through Blackness", released in 2017, is an imposing piece of dark ambient. The next two albums continued the careful exploration of sonic textures that characterised their debut. Entitled respectively "Mysterium Coniunctionis" (2018) on the Mind Travels series (Ici d'ailleurs), and "The Descent of Inana" (2019), these albums are a continuation of URUK's own mysterious and dark universe.

This new album, the fourth for URUK: "The Great Central Sun", is an album of experimental music that contains only two long tracks with enigmatic names, suggesting an introspective or even mystical sound experience, where the listener seems to be called upon to explore hidden or mysterious aspects of himself and the universe: "Per speculum in aenigmates": (Through a mirror, in a riddle) and "Radiating rainbows". This choice to offer only two tracks is a prolongation of their previous compositions, where each album offers only two very long tracks, between 18 and 25 minutes.

"The Great Central Sun" is an album oscillating between drone and ambient, in a mysterious and hazy atmosphere, evoking images of interstellar travel or mental explorations. It should be perceived as a real sensory journey, immersing the listener in a dense and complex sound universe. These two long pieces seem eternal and take us from another space-time, the elaborate textures and hypnotic sounds of Thighpaulsandra on synthesizer, create a captivating atmosphere. This new URUK record (CD & Digital) results in a work where every detail is worked out with remarkable precision, a transcendental experience, the vision of a world beyond reality.
